Blitz is stupid mode

Whoever invented the blitz mode (I mean, not on lichess, but anywhere in the world), must have been totally crazy and not understanding the point of the game at all.
I think this mode is a laugh in the face of the beautiful strategic game of chess.
Most of the games I tried playing I lost for one of two reasons:
-The opponent made a move that was totally unexpected and I did not have a response prepared and lost some seconds and my time ran out after few more moves. Okey, perhaps some people enjoy this kind of game, but for me, it's not the point of chess.
-I did not see the opponent make a move at all (should I check the timer, to see whose is ticking, or the board?) Usually when the opponent makes a move in the opposite corner of the board than what we are playing (like, when most pieces are concentrating for example around c3 and the opponent makes a pawn move on g6), it takes me few seconds to even notice that there was a move.
I suppose this does not happen in real life, when you see the opponent move his hand, but here, it sucks...

Could you think of something to eliminate at least the second thing in this online environment?

#edit: and it is double that valid for bullet mode. that is not about being better at all, it is about making faster moves
Turn sound effects on? Then you can at least hear when your opponent moves.
hmm... I did not notice sound effects, but anyway, these suck.
How about adding a sound of wooden piece being put on a wooden board :D these sounds are more disturbing than helping
I will stick to standard games, where I have much higher rating :)
Make sure you have the sound on so that you can hear when a move has been made : )

My problem with bullet / blitz chess is that I am too slow using the mouse : (
@MartinPanda, if you could find or create a few good-quality sound files for this that are released under a suitable license, I'm sure the developers would be happy to add it as an alternative to the seven existing sound effect sets.
@phlegm yeah, I already learned not to play blitz/bullet on touchpad :D

@Kranix I am sure the devs can record their own sound, which would be much easier for them than verifying license on any sound I supply

anyway, since there are sounds, it is just my problem that I don't like them, I would much more like opinions on my first point. Do you like the blitz/bullet modes from the gameplay point of view? Do you like that it is more about surprises than about strategy? Maybe some people like this aspect
I think speed chess helps develop instinctive play, recognising positions and patterns and being decisive which in turn might help in your classic games : )
First, you are absolutely right about blitz chess being quite an idiotic idea. But it's so addictive! xD (I guess it's the same / even more so with bullet - but luckily, I have managed to abstain from playing bullet... for now.)
Generally, I think you need a lot of experience to be able to play blitz / bullet well or even enjoy it. If you spend too much time on playing what a more experienced player would consider a "natural move", you will lose every single game on time.
Especially finding a good plan in a new kind of position / pawn structure that you are unfamiliar with will consume way too much time. So, basically, you need to have seen (and you need to understand) all sorts of different position types and pawn structures before you even have the chance of playing a decent blitz game.

Considering unexpected moves from your opponent: If the move is bad, then it should be worth spending some time to find a "refutation". If the move is good, you better hadn't missed it!

Also, always look at the whole board! This is a very important skill. Missing a move by your opponent b/c you only looked at one particular area of the board should never happen to you!

Generally, if you're still trying to learn the game or improve, play longer time controls! Blitz chess is not going to help you improve at all!
