Gruenfeld move order question

why is it important to play in the exchange variation 6... bg7 and only then c5? There are games on the highest lvl which play 6... c5 but white scores much better.
why is that?
How can I take advantage of c5 first?

thx in advance!
I don't think there is a serious difference. Most of the time 6...c5 and 6...Bg7 should just transpose into each other.

It's more a matter of flexibility. Black is always playing ...Bg7, but there are rare lines where they can choose not to play ...c5 so quickly. For example: 6...Bg7 7.Bc4 0-0 8.Ne2 Nc6!? is playable and Black will usually go ...Na5...b6...and then only ...c5

In short, it's not really punishable. Black just loses some choices by playing 6...c5 first
@pushwood couldnt figure it out.. most of the games just transpose^^

Someone recently pointed out to me that after 6...c5 7.Bb5+ is playable... where you can then trade the bishop, which seems good for white no?

@fischerfan10
makes sense
6...c5 allows 7.Bb5+ but prevents 7.Qa4+, that's the main difference I found with 6...Bg7.
6...Bg7 7.Qa4+ Qd7 and 7...Nd7 are close to equal and 6...c5 7.Bb5+ Bd7 8.Be2 Bg7 9.Nf3 is +/=. So 6...Bg7 is main.
