15 seconds rule kills us!!!

I have to agree, sometimes lichess is really snappy and fast and other times it feels laggy and slow. And if you're on a weak and old laptop then you're bound to struggle with technicalities. I myself have a fast desktop so it's generally not so bad that I default my games, but it can be a bit slow sometimes.
Somewhat related: in the English interface, the connectivity mouseover popup is initially set to "Player has left the game" before the player has actually connected. I can imagine some of the more impatient players (esp. anonymous ones) thinking that that means the opponent has already left which leads them to prematurely aborting those games.

I read an older thread where this timeout used to be longer. http://en.lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/1-minute-forfeit-1?page=1

If this shortening trend (somehow) continues, then it will just become as bad as chess.com with regards to latency leniency. :(
Unfortunately, I have experienced the same exact problem many times just as you did. I once complained about this problem to Thibault and he blocked me for complaining about it. :( :( :(
